Whose justice? Gender and power in South Asia’s legal institutions

The benchmarks South Asia’s legal institutions are measured against are largely set elsewhere. Over half of the 302 most senior offices in global law and justice are held by nationals of two countries, the United States and the United Kingdom, and fewer than one in ten by women from low- and middle-income countries.
On Wednesday 19th August, the Asia Justice Coalition and Global 50/50 will convene a regional conversation on the findings of Gender (In)Justice?, an assessment of gender equality across the institutions of global law and justice. The session will consider what the evidence means for South Asia, and what should happen next. Our confirmed speakers are Dr. Faustina Pereira (Bangladesh), Former Justice Kumudini Wickremasinghe (Sri Lanka) and a Only 9% of the 302 most senior offices in the organisations assessed are held by women from low- and middle-income countries, and just 1% by women from low-income countries. Every country in South Asia falls within those classifications. This session asks what that concentration of power means for the region, and for the people who depend on these institutions.
