This is Gender: Photography on the Frontlines of Justice

This is Gender: Photography on the Frontlines of Justice is a curated video essay bringing together 85 photographs from This is Gender — Global 50/50’s international visual storytelling initiative exploring how gender is lived, embodied, and contested around the world.

Drawn from our global archive spanning more than 140 countries, the video places diverse perspectives in dialogue, tracing moments of care, resistance, labour, intimacy, and everyday life. Together, the images challenge colonial, patriarchal, and heteronormative framings that have long shaped how gender is seen and understood.

A meditative narration by curator Imogen Bakelmun is woven through the work, inviting viewers to reflect on the politics of looking, the frames that construct visibility, and the possibilities of imagining gender — and justice — differently.

Originally created for the reconference 2025 exhibition in Kathmandu, Nepal.
