Global Health 50/50: Assessing gender justice in health organisations

Since 2017, Global 50/50 has tracked how the world's most influential health organisations perform on gender. Our annual report and Gender and Health Index are the global benchmark used by governments, funders and institutions to hold themselves and each other to account.

What we do

The Global Health 50/50 annual report assesses the gender- and fairness-related policies and practices of 200 organisations active in global health, including UN agencies, governments, NGOs, funders, research institutions and more. We measure them against the same evidence-informed standards each year, making performance visible, comparable and actionable.

The report is the most comprehensive assessment of gender justice in the global health sector. Our Gender and Health Index presents the full dataset online to enable interrogation of how organisations are performing and how that has changed over time.

If our leaders and our workforce come together and commit to change, I know that we can create kinder places for all of us to work. I would like to thank Global Health 50/50 for their work in this space, and I look forward
to seeing the progress we can make in the year ahead.
Jacinda Ardern, former Prime Minister of New Zealand

What we measure

The Gender and Health Index assesses the policies and published data of around 200 organisations active in global health, including UN agencies, governments, NGOs, funders, research institutions and private sector companies. Each variable we measure captures a distinct part of what makes a workplace fair to the people in it: what an organisation commits to on gender, how it defines gender, how it treats its staff, who sits on its board, and whether it reports sex-disaggregated data. We measure them against the same evidence-informed standards each year, making performance visible, comparable and actionable.

The 2025 report: Holding the Line

For the first time since we began monitoring in 2018, our 2025 report documented a measurable decline in public commitments and workplace policies for gender equality across the sector. Against a backdrop of political pressure and institutional retreat, Holding the Line also documented resilience – and more globally representative leadership than at any point in our nine years of monitoring.
